![]() |
Hotma "Meng" Roni Simamora born in Kuala Lumpur on August 15, 1974, in a family passionate about movies, music, and literature. Meng is an autodidact. His interest in music encouraged him to learn to play his sister's guitar when he was a fifth grader. Inspired by The Beatles, he made his first songwriting attempt when he was 13. During his early songwriting period, the only listeners were his two younger sisters and some of his close friends. Ever since then he's been writing his own music. In year 2000, a month before he graduated college, his strong passion for photography led him to become a freelance assistant to photographer Harry Wibawa and Jez O'Hare. He also started to build his own photography business. In spare time, he channeled his music hobby by performing solo, covering his favorite songs, at an event called Friday Jazz at Pasar Festival Kuningan Jakarta, a regular show featuring a senior jazz musician, Ireng Maulana. He played during the break. Until recently, while working as a freelance photographer, Meng still actively writes his own tunes. Two of his songs submitted to online songwriting competitions. "Time" made its way to become a finalist in John Lennon Songwriting Contest (session 2, 2006). While his other song, "Surrender", became a semi-finalist in UK Songwriting Contest 2008. |
