FROM ZERO TO FLOATPROJECT

2002

Two years after graduated college, while working as a freelance photographer, singer/songwriter Hotma “Meng” Roni Simamora was asked to join a band called Zero by his old friend in highschool, Svendpri Sanderson Umpel. Zero is a side-band formed by Svendpri (vocal/guitar) and his two bandmates in Mangobuds. They're Priyo Budz (bass) and Richard Henry Pattiradjawane (gitar). Windra “Bontel” Benyamin, a guitarist to Mangobuds, often joined to hang out when Zero was having rehearsals and gigs.

In late December 2002, at the place where they were staying when Zero had a gig in Bandung, Bontel asked Meng to play his own originals. After listening to his tunes, he invited Meng to come to his place and record the songs in his home studio.

2003

In early January 2003, Bontel and Meng recorded the guide tracks for the songs. The songs are mostly written by Meng in the 90s (“Pulang”, “Sementara”, “Perlahan”, and “Biasa” which is the original version of “3 Hari Untuk Selamanya”). Others are his newest works by that time (“No-Dream Land” and “Stupido Ritmo”). With given materials, Bontel, as a producer, offered Meng an opportunity to make his own solo album. Not long after that, each of them resigned from Zero and Mangobuds.

2004

Bontel chose “Pulang” to work on first. Unfortunately, after few months, in the middle of the process, something terrible happened. The data files of his work on “Pulang” somehow got corrupted. His being overloaded by jobs at work also inevitably contributed to the delay on the project. It took him nearly a year to do the work. To finish the arrangement in “Pulang”, Bontel felt the urge to replace the “plastic” bass track he already made with VST instrument. He persuaded his old bandmate in d’Opera, Raymond “Remon” Agus Saputra, to join in as a bass player. As Remon began to take part, Bontel asked Meng to continue the project as a band.

In August 22, 2004 the group finished the recording sessions for “Pulang” and “Stupido Ritmo”.

Despite the rapid growth of independent music industry, they did nothing with their record but to share it with friends instead of selling it. Because it was only “Stupido Ritmo” that had been mastered, the CD only consisted of one song. They hadn’t even thought of naming their group until a friend Febby Lubis asked them for a name that represented their collaboration. For that, on August 30, 2004, Meng offered three names and FLOAT was voted the best name as it reflected the band's emphasis on freedom of expression and their overall approach to making music.

Febby secretly sent the single to Anton “Not” Wahyudi, who, by that time, was the music director of a radio station in Jakarta, Prambors. Not long after that, “Stupido Ritmo” got broadcasted and entered the chart called “Prambors Nubuzz”, a program featuring indie artists. The song made it to the top on December 8, 2004, and had remained there for 3 weeks.

With the addition of the song “No-Dream Land”, Float decided to independently make their debut album with the same title along with the other two songs, “Pulang” and “Stupido Ritmo”.

2005

With full support from friends and family, finally the mastering session of the album was completely finished. The record then got duplicated, each one with an artwork cover. The mixing & mastering process was done by Jaya ROXX, Bontel’s brother. The cover was designed by a friend, Fero Utama. Meng was in charge in photography with a help of his friend, Klemens Kananlua. Not only that, a friend named Joe Gievano, a filmmaker, also offered his contribution by making them a video clip of “Pulang”, featuring Bonita Shinta Dewi.

In early January 2005, 1000 copies of Float’s debut album got released and independently distributed. Many of the copies were sent to friends, some radio & TV stations, and other potential market.

In April 2005 Prambors Radio station gave FLOAT an award for being a band whose music they considered to be "out of the box" in an event called “Prambors Blast The Rewards”.

Unexpectedly, on November 19, 2005, a film producer Mira Lesmana was among the small crowd at their mini concert at Tornado Coffee Kemang Jakarta. At the break she came to say that she liked their music. She offered the group a collaboration where Float, with their full album, would make a soundtrack for her upcoming movie “3 Hari Untuk Selamanya”, directed by Riri Riza. The group eagerly took that rare opportunity.

2006

Unfortunately, as time went on, with no-one officially in charge taking care of the group's management, despite getting more exposures and recognition, it became hard for them to focus on developing both their music & the potential business. It became even harder when Bontel & Remon got recruited by the same company that eventually made it impossible for the three to congregate within regular schedule. On February 5, 2006, Meng finally decided to continue his project as a solo artist

But, that seperation didn’t last long. At the meeting of Meng and a friend of his wife, Abang Edwin SA, he shared the recent condition of Float. Abang suggested that together they should meet Mira Lesmana to explain the situation regarding the offer of a collaboration that was already accepted by Float. Finally, Meng agreed to reunite with Bontel & Remon in the new Float as a project group. Abang was then in charge as the project manager. In April 2006, they started to work on their album titled “Music For 3 Hari Untuk Selamanya” (Miles Music, 2007). On December 21, 2006, the mastering session was finished. Not long after that, Jakobus Mulia joined in to support the managerial role.

2007

On July 18, 2007 Timur Segara (drums, Clorophyl) joined Float as a supporting musician.

With their soundtrack album, Float has won major honors, including the prestigious Abhinaya Trophy for Best Soundtrack at the Jakarta Film Festival and an award for Best Theme Song at the MTV Indonesian Movie Awards, both in the year of 2007. Their song “Surrender” was featured in media promotion for a series produced by Satellite Television for the Asian Region (STAR), a pay satellite television based in Hong Kong. The series titled “Heroes” (season 2).

2008

In early 2008 each member of Float decided to run their own project. Meng continued Float by working on his own music. One of them, “Waltz Musim Pelangi”, included in the compilation album "Songs Inspired by Laskar Pelangi" (Miles Music, 2008).

2011

After two years, Meng finally found his new team to resurrect Float. It all started when he met again with Timur Segara (drums, Clorophyl) in early December 2010. Timur suggested that, with a new team, Float should get back on stages. As their very first appearence, they planned to perform at Java Jazz Festival 2011 with Meng's brother in-law, Leo Christian (bass, Ecoutez!), who happened to be Timur's old friend back then in highschool. To complete the formation, David Q Lintang (gitar, Clorophyl) and Iyas Pras (keyboard, Ecoutez!) joined in.

After only few rehearsals, with some minor adjustments, the chemistry required to bind the group together began to reveal itself. As it grew stronger, now they've made new arrangements in "3 Hari Untuk Selamanya", "Sementara", "Surrender", "Tiap Senja", "Stupido Ritmo", "Pulang", a new song written by Meng, "Indah Hari Itu".

Float didn't get to perform in Java Jazz Festival 2011 due to the registration deadline. The short-term project then changed its direction. Not only getting in public performances, with their new commitment, the new team are now working on a new album.
